If you love someone, then yes, you must understand him, but even if you do not love someone, meaning it could be any person or a friend, it is still equally important to understand them. Understanding another person is not for them, it is for you, for your mind to be open. As your mind opens to consider the other persons feelings and thoughts, so you understand them better, that in fact makes your mind open and evolve, raising your spirit to conquor the lesser ego with all its fears and grasping. Balance is the key, between knowing what you really need, and knowing what the other person needs. But beware, what you THINK he needs may only be your imagination, and not really what he is thinking. We all want someone else to totally understand us but we are too focused on being understood to understand others. For example if i love someone i try all means to understand him even if i know i might not be able to completely do it, but he's just waiting for me to get closer to him.
